Lucas turns fitfully in the bed, the presence of the demon inside the recesses of his dishevelled mind making sleep next to impossible. In spite of this, the Kindred Warrior was unable to draw himself out of a recurring nightmare, something that echoed with the stench of evil and decay that could have only come from the source of corruption now lodged deep inside. Justice continued to fight the entity but the effort to keep it in abeyance was consuming every ounce of strength it had. As such, the nightmare continued to repeat unabated, fresh victims and fresh images of unholy destruction continued to assault the Kindred member’s senses. After a while, Lucas began to have the stench of blood fill his nostrils, making him heave.
In his mind’s eye the images flickered past until it settled onto one in particular. The dreary apartment in Coney Island is replaced with one somewhere else in New York except this one is overlooking Central Park. Lucas seems to be able to move about his new surroundings, the entire vision not having revealed itself yet. He looks at a desk where some newspapers lie strewn. He can’t help but noticing the date, August 17th 1947. Lucas immediately turns to gaze out upon the city, finding it all too familiar before the abrupt sound of a door being kicked open behind him draws his attention. In front of his steely visage he witnesses a man enter the room. The sounds of ‘If I didn’t Care’ by the Ink Spots drift over to the Kindred member for the first time. The newcomer’s head whips around suddenly and he races over to the source of the noise.
Lucas’ stomach begins churning with horror. He knew this moment. He had lived it on a myriad of occasions when the night was long and the rain fell unabated; the long nights when being alone was the worst thing in the world. The newcomer turns his head and Lucas stares at a younger version of himself. He frantically darts around the room; his colossal anger being directed at every inanimate object within reach. The body of a young woman lies twisted and contorted; her face a hideous mask of suffering until she was no longer recognisable except that of a victim of a particularly brutal crime. The younger Lucas’ seething rage draws forth his old ally and the familiar hum of the Justice Demon takes control of his body, the entity realising the futility in his host’s actions. The older Lucas can only watch; his senses numb as he bears witness to the destruction of one of the few people in his life that had ever meant anything to him.
The Warrior turns his back on the grizzly scene but his past was not so easily escaped. The demon’s laugh draws him back to the here and now but they remain in the 1940s apartment. Another vision of Lucas shimmers into life, this one with red eyes and now the demon talks directly to the man he’s trying to destroy.
Do you like watching your failures over and over again? I thought it would be good sport to break your resolve while your little pet works so hard to contain that which he cannot comprehend. I’ve always been there Lucas, since the beginning of the world, since the first corruption, the first fall from grace. I will always be there, regardless of what you and your little friends plan to do. My only question to you is this, where in New York will you find a soul stone before I poison every thought, purge every good deed and erase your past? You see, I showed you this moment in particular because you just saw my handiwork. Don’t think you’ve operated for this long without drawing our attention Lucas. We are always watching. We have the patience that only a millennia of planning can bring and our moment of triumph is at hand. You will unfortunately not be there to see it.
Yet another form appears, this one being Lucas again but sporting the pale blue eyes that can only mean one thing, Justice. His eyes burn hotly in his skull and he pushes the Kindred member back and a pair of ethereal wings floats out from his co-dependant’s form. Justice offers no answering retort, merely a grin of mock pleasure. He then charges forwards and envelops the demon in his embrace, breaking the vision instantly. Lucas wakes to find himself back in Coney Island and once more the raging screams of his nightmare throw themselves against the prison of Justice’s devising. The voice of evil had been silenced, but it would not be long before the battle lines were drawn.
